Delete your account

How to permanently remove your Aftrword account and data.

Aftrword treats your data as yours. If you decide that the platform is no longer for you, you can delete your account at any time. Below is the exact path, what gets deleted, what may be retained, and how long it takes.

From inside the app (recommended)

  1. Open Aftrword on your phone.
  2. Tap Profile in the bottom navigation.
  3. Tap Settings, then Account.
  4. Tap Delete account and confirm with your password or sign-in method.

If you can't sign in

Email us at [email protected] from the address on file with your account, and we will verify ownership and complete the deletion within seven days.

What gets deleted

  • Your email, password hash, nickname, and profile fields (regions, languages, bio).
  • Every post, reaction, save, highlight, and chat message you authored.
  • Your follow graph (who you followed and who followed you).
  • Your read history and reading-track signals.
  • Any verification tokens, password reset tokens, and session refresh tokens.

What we keep (and for how long)

  • Soft-delete window: 90 days. When you press delete, your account is immediately deactivated and made invisible. The row is then hard-deleted (or anonymised) by an automated job within 90 days. This window exists so that an accidental deletion can be reversed.
  • Audit log pointers. If you were involved in a moderation action (report, strike, ban), an anonymised pointer to the action is retained as part of the audit log for safety and legal continuity. The pointer does not include your email, nickname, or content.
  • Payment records (when applicable). Tax and accounting law requires us to retain billing records for the period mandated by the relevant jurisdiction (typically seven years). These records are not used for any other purpose.

Automatic data deletion

Even if you do not press delete yourself, certain categories of user data are removed automatically:

  • Email verification tokens expire after 24 hours and are then purged.
  • Password reset tokens expire after 30 minutes and are then purged.
  • Refresh tokens expire after 30 days of inactivity.
  • IP addresses logged for security or rate limiting are retained for 90 days.
  • Crash reports and diagnostics are retained for 90 days.

Need a copy first?

Before you delete, you can export your data from inside the app: Settings → Privacy → Export my data. We send a JSON archive of your posts, reactions, conversations, and profile to your verified email within a few minutes.
